Spider Feature: The Smiling Spider

The smiling spider. The happy face spider. Really, this little guy is called Theridion grallator and it is a happy native of Hawaii.

By little, we actually mean tiny. This spider’s average size is .2 inches. It lives on the underside of leaves and each spider has a unique pattern of markings, many of which look like happy faces.

While these markings might help confuse predators, the spiders are nocturnal and so it is unlikely that they would need the markings to protect themselves.

The takeaway?

There doesn’t have to be a reason to be happy and good things come in small packages- like Paiyak Development.
